If you’re from East Providence, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve either heard of Tyson—or you’ve had the pleasure of meeting him and his BFF, Sandra Sanford.
The dynamic duo can be found just about anywhere there’s a community gathering in East Providence and throughout the region. Whether it’s a local event, fundraiser or community celebration, there’s a good chance Sandra and Tyson will be there.
At EastProv Hospitality, we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know both Sandra and Tyson, and they’ve become good friends of ours. So when we learned that Tyson’s incredible real-life story was becoming a children’s book, we couldn’t have been happier for our friends—and especially excited to see our four-legged friend become the hero of his very own book.
Meet Tyson: A Hero Dog
Written by Sandy Sanford with drawings by Stanley Silva, Tyson: A Hero Dog tells the true story of a small, scruffy mixed terrier who proved that you don’t have to be big to do something extraordinary.
The adventure begins when a beloved dog named Olive goes missing.
For two days, Olive’s family and neighbors search everywhere they can think of. Then Tyson and his BFF Sandy happen upon the scene.
Tyson isn’t a police dog or a trained search dog. He doesn’t have a badge or a special vest. He’s just Tyson—and apparently, that’s all he needs.
He puts his nose to the ground and heads into the woods, through trees and tangled brush, following a scent the human searchers couldn’t find.
And there she is.
Olive—frightened, hiding and very much alive.
After two days of searching, Tyson finds her in just a few minutes.
For his heroism, Tyson received recognition from the Governor of Rhode Island and the Mayor of East Providence.
But Tyson’s story is about more than finding a lost dog.
A Little Dog With a Big Message
Tyson: A Hero Dog is a story about courage, compassion, determination and helping others when they need you.
Its message to young readers is simple:
You don’t have to be big, strong or loud to make a difference. Sometimes the smallest dog—or the smallest person—can do the very greatest things.
A Special Dedication
The book is dedicated to the late Judge Frank Caprio, in honor of his kindness and compassion—a fitting tribute for a book centered around helping others and making a difference.
And there’s another reason to feel good about bringing Tyson’s story home. A portion of the proceeds from the book will benefit animal shelters and rescues throughout Rhode Island.
For those of us who know Sandra and Tyson, seeing their story become a published children’s book is especially meaningful.
Tyson isn’t just a character in this book. He’s one of our own.
