Rumford Junction — A Roots/Folk Band Deeply Rooted in East Prov!

East Providence based Rumford Junction is a five-piece acoustic roots/folk group that performs both original material and covers from other artists that the band lends their own twist. The combination of guitars, accordion, fiddle, drums, bass and strong vocals makes for the unmistakable Rumford Junction sound.

The origins of Rumford Junction started during the pandemic of 2020. As a group of neighbors from Rumford, they started playing music together on front lawns and porches during the spring and summer of 2020, as a way to entertain themselves and their neighbors. “As it turns out, music is the best medicine – even for a pandemic” notes Rumford Junction band member, Lisa G.

The jams became something to look forward to over many months of pandemic-imposed boredom, but they soon realized that they love making music together. In 2021 they started performing at nearby Hunts Mills, as a way to hone their skills and add another dimension to the monthly “Open House” events organized by the East Providence Historical Society.

Since then, the band has continued to evolve by expanding their live performance appearances and continue to write and record original material. In March, the band spent time recording a new round of original songs that will soon to be available on popular streaming platforms like Spotify and others. The band’s original songs tend to be about everyday life. Recently recorded titles included Slow Burn, Ten Mile River Waltz, Beach Day and Procrastination.

Rumford Junction’s current set list includes about twenty-five percent original material, which is growing all the time. A sample of covers include Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash), (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding), A Lifetime to Find (Wilco), Tupelo (Jason Isbell), Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) and Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon) to name a few.

The East Providence home grown band is made up of Tim Messitt – Guitar and Vocals, Ed Synan – Guitar and Vocals, Lisa G – Accordion, Fiddle and Vocals, John Popoli – Drums and John DeMaria on bass.

Recent Rumford Junction shows include Myrtle and Crooked Point Brewing Company in East Providence, The Guild in Pawtucket and Borealis Coffee Roasters in Bristol. Shows coming up include a return to Borealis Coffee Roasters (April 29th / 7—9pm) and the Hope Street Market in Providence (May 11th / 9:30am—12:30pm). Shows are being added all the time and can be found on the band’s social media sites.
