Back In the Day (Nov. 25, 1990): Riverside Almacs Re-Opens To Rave Reviews!

It was over four-decades ago when Almacs re-opened their new & improved location in Riverside, RI. Three days after Thanksgiving and at the start of the holiday season, the Riverside Almacs‘ Grand Re-Opening took place on November 25th in 1990. The up-graded supermarket featured a full-service Flower Shop, fresh Donut Shop and an Almacs Family Video department.

The image below is of a promotional article titled “Almacs News”, dated December 1990. The article features a photo of the new Riverside location’s store manager Ron Coleman along with Frank Avila, Dave Simoes, Paul Campbell and Jack Brennan.

Almacs is considered the last Rhode Island-owned grocery chain and at its height, it had 43 locations located in RI and MA. The retailer began in 1942 in Rhode Island, but on December 14, 1995, just five years after the Riverside re-opening, the grocery chain closed their doors for good.
