East Providence is About to Get Tastier: Cafe Matos Set to Launch in January!

Matos Bakery is launching an exciting new café concept in East Providence this fall! Café Matos, a Portuguese-inspired café, is scheduled to open in January at 227 Warren Avenue, a space formerly occupied by Silva’s Seafood Market, along with the adjacent commercial space.

During a recent phone call, EastProv Hospitality was excited to learn more about the upcoming business directly from Chef Kevin Matos, owner of Café Matos. Based on Matos’s passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the foodservice industry, you can be assured that the East Providence foodie community is in for a real treat.

The 40-plus capacity café will resemble traditional small, community-oriented bistros or tascas found across Portugal. These are places where people go not just to eat but to connect and unwind

Matos noted that his vision is to bring the best of Portugal to the region through his multi-serving café, which combines the offerings of a bistro, restaurant, and bakery into one cohesive business.

The new café will offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, with small plates, or more precisely, petiscos, as they are called in Portugal, on Thursday through Saturday.

The café will also serve craft cocktails along with a notable selection of fine Portuguese wines. Planned events at Café Matos include a Thursday Fado night, a cultural and musical evening dedicated to traditional Portuguese music and heritage.

In addition to weekly small plate specials, Café Matos will offer a weekend brunch. Expect classic brunch favorites with a Portuguese twist on many dishes. As an accomplished chef with deep roots in the New England culinary scene, Matos will occasionally invite guest chefs for special dinner events.

And of course, Café Matos will sell the famously delicious Portuguese pastries and breads directly from their sister business, Matos Bakery, in Pawtucket. Or as Matos likes to call it, our “Mother Bakery.” Matos points out, “It’s a term of respect, my parents started this bakery and sacrificed and worked so hard to be able to give this future to me. They are proof that the American dream is the real thing.”
