The Barrington Public Library will feature the amazing artwork of Rhode Island artist Joseph Mushipi during the month of February 2025.
If the name Joseph Mushipi sounds familiar to East Providence residents it should, Joseph was among several talented artists that were commissioned by the EP Arts Council to transform several East Providence city utility boxes into a work of art. Joseph is responsible for the awesome giraffe mural at the corner of Willett Avenue and Legion Way in Riverside.
The month-long art exhibition at the Barrington Public Library is in honor of Black History Month and will be Joseph’s first solo show!
A self-taught visual artist from Zambia, Joseph paints and sculpts with extraordinary attention to detail, with a particular eye for the warmth of animation and the small humors he observes in everyday life. He considers himself an African storyteller through his work, drawing inspiration from African folktales, experiences as well as wildlife.
Joseph spent the last 12 years living in Eswatini, a small country in Southern Africa, before immigrating to the US with his Rhode Island-born wife and young son in May of 2021.
A sampling of Joseph’s murals, paintings and sculptures can be found on his website at www.josephmushipi.com. You can also follow Joseph on Facebook at www.facebook.com/joseph.mushipi/ for day-to-day updates and artwork images.
